Moochalabra Dam & Rock Art
Overview
Moochalabra Dam, located 26km from Wyndham, was built in 1971 to supply water to the town. There’s a beautiful picnic area beneath a large Boab tree, making it a great starting point for exploring nearby Aboriginal cave paintings or observing local wildlife. Just before the dam turn-off, you'll find Moochalabra Creek crossing, where lush greenery thrives under the shade of tall paperbark trees. Don't miss the chance to see the diverse birdlife around the waterholes along the King River, which is 20 kilometers past the dam turn-off.
The dam's unique design allows overflow to flow through the rock at the hill's crest, creating a stunning waterfall during the wet season. Since it serves as the town’s water supply, fishing, camping, and swimming are not permitted. Wyndham is just an hour's drive west of Kununurra, and its numerous waterways, including the nearby Marglu Billabong, make it an excellent spot for birdwatching.
